Loathing

Loathing

Your love tore
Like a file
Into my heart;
As I watched
You laugh,
The sun bled
Into my eyes.
You move with limbs of snake,
Mind of ice, heart of coal,
Hurl hooks from your tongue;
You burn me with your eyes;

You destroy what bores you,
And leave a deadly sent--
A scent of death in the air--
Still I crouch at your feet.
You shimmer,
Transform inside out,
Strobe into a thousand frames--
Your voice like honey,
Like acid flowing through my brain;
Though Venus brightly glitters
Like a lovely icy sliver
In your eye--
Still I crave to be abused
In the precious name of servitude.

You quiver,
Bend in and out of shape,
Burst into a thousand flames--
Your smile like sunlight,
Like herion seeping through my veins;
Though Venus brightly glitters
Like a lovely icy sliver
In your eye--
Still I crave to be abused
In the precious name of servitude.

The sharp echo of your screams,
The numbing sent in the air,
The pointless self-recriminations
That one tries so hard not to spare--
Nothing else is left;
Bit by bit,
I crumble
With every nasty step of your departing feet--
How good it feels to loath myself and weep!

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
