    One Week to Go

    "One Week"

    One Week

    Just one week

    Seven days

    times 24

    equals 168 hours

    168 hours times 60 equals

    10080 seconds and

    that is all the time

    he had left

    till he came home

till the children would have been smiling

    and the mother

    wrapped

    in the warmth of

    a living mans embrace

    instead of locked

    in the eternal grip

    of a final kiss

    of a corpse

    drenched in death

    and hardened blue blood

    and stiff limbs

    those he had left

    after the IED decimated

    his once cherished

    form

    and this

    my civilian witness

    this is the reality

    that we

    who still live

    and still believe in

    this life

    must face

    must glide forward, onward

    each day with patience

    and grace

    in place of

    casual existence

    the reality of

    our persistance

    to live and to love

    a soldier.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
