          PAIN

     © 2007

Deep down my spine I feel the twinge

    Of an excruciating pain

Like a bullet from a gun

Forcing itself to the inner man

    And twirls itself around,

Disfiguring and distorting the beauty of God’s love.

    Pain! Pain! Yes, Pain!

Pain! It warps, it alters, it deforms,

Yes! I can feel it-emotional pain.

It rages deep inside and transforms my perception

Then explodes like the blast of a cannon,

Splitting the air with its blistering steam like a volcano

And blemishes the glory deep within.

    Pain! Pain! Yes, Pain!

Pain! It hurts, it mars and it tarnishes,

Blasting like a dynamite breaking a hard rock

And damaging the charm that God has placed within.

Yes! It does, it makes me want to quit

But I won’t let it control me!

I will let go and let God!

    Pain! Pain! Yes, Pain!

    Pain! Yes, Pain!

Attacking like a bandit in the dark,

Robbing and destroying the love it never sows

Harvesting the seeds it never plants

And leaving me shabby, tatty and frayed

Dismantling my features then say goodbye

When I appear hideous, gruesome and aged.

    Pain! Pain! Yes, Pain!

Pain! It comes like a faithful friend

Who holds you taut in his arms

An ally who makes many promises yet never accomplishes them

One who never wants to let go

But when he does you’re left in the cold

To bear the hurt that lingers ceaselessly.

    Pain! Pain! Yes, Pain!

Despite the pain my destiny belongs safely in the hands of Jesus; the author and finisher of my faith.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
