Poem Commentary

This poem was inspired by the homeless people that inhabit our world.  I greatly admire their courage and ability to persevere.

Please Look at Me As You Pass By

Please look at me as you pass by,
I'm one of you, I laugh, I cry.

A  wave, a smile won't cost you much,
My soul will feel your loving touch.

I, too once led a fruitful life,
Had family, love, and bitter strife.

I took all of God's gifts for granted,
In a moment It all ended.

Now I am homeless and alone,
While you hurry to get home.

Remember as you pass me by,
"There but for the grace of God go I."

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
