    Poem Commentary

Written during a tumultuous, uncertain time in a relationship.

    RIDING THE RAILS

    We've both got ourselves
    on this railroad track.
    I'm facing forward
    and you're facing back.
    I'm look ahead
to find out where we're going
    and you won't turn around
so you've no way of knowing.
    I'm anxious to see
    what's around the next bend
    and you're talking about
    all the places we've been.
    So here's my advice
and I'll say it quite plain.
    Either watch where we're headed
    or get off this train.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
