    Sadness

This war is getting longer and longer. When will the killing stop? People so sick that they can’t even lift a finger. I look up and see the moon throw the giant hole in the ghetto’s roof. The moon is my only escape for this horrible reality. I look and keep on looking. In the sparkling moon rolls a tear down my face. I think of this sadness and how people act when they know that their about to die. Things they do to live a little longer. I also think about the life I would have had. Many of us would have been famous or even heroes. This sadness is so consuming. Death is common here in Bergen Belsen. I here moans from all women and girls, moans of suffering, and of pain. I pray this war will end soon very soon. People screaming “Help. Get me out of here.” This suffering is getting too much for me. I feel I’m going to die in my sleep if I’m not careful. I dream myself in a better world. A world where we can be free and living in harmony again. Instead of this pit of dismay and destruction. Most people had given up and excepted death. Others say Hitler is doing this for fun. But I think it’s because Hitler hates us for being Jewish. And the sad thing is that it’s true.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
