She Waits In The Shadows

She Waits In The Shadows

Once she was a little girl of dreams and hopes and fears
Once she was a little girl and chose what she'd hold dear.
She grew up quick and she grew up hard
She wished for champagne glasses but only got the shards.
She never felt too popular and she never felt too pretty
She went instead for wisdom and hoped there'd be no pity.

She waits in the shadows
And you know she holds him dear.
She waits in the shadows
Though he never comes near.

For years she skated in circles round the rink
When he took her hand in this she thought she'd made the link.
She knew that he was special and she hoped he was the one
She just didn't know how quickly it would all be undone.

She waits in the shadows
And you know she holds him dear.
She waits in the shadows
Though he never comes near.

Another man came along and took her by the hand
The hourglass was trickling and running out of sand.
He worked to avoid her and he drank when he could
She knew that it was over and she left when she should.

She waits in the shadows
And you know she holds him dear.
She waits in the shadows
Though he never comes near.

The next was special and she gave him her whole heart
She was so very sure they'd never be apart.
The times just kept on changing
And her life was rearranging.

She waits in the shadows
And you know she holds him dear.
She waits in the shadows
Though he never comes near.

Now life has swung around again
She's back where she began.
Some things can never be changed
Not even rearranged.

So she waits in the shadows
And you know she holds him dear.
She waits in the shadows
Though he never comes near.

I can feel the unfulfillment in this one and i really love the recurring refrain because we all have some hopes un fulfilled. Great write!

That is about my very first love in life. We went steady more than not through junior high and most of high school. I was devastated when he broke up with me. Over thirty years later he looked me up and apologized to me. I'm pleased to say that he's my friend and confidante and though we both long for what we once had and lost we know that circumstances make it impossible. So I'm in the background, content to be wallpaper in his life.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
