    Slam Poem to the Elders

We were taught to respect and always attend church
They watched very carefully on top of a birch
Why is it that they won’t let us do anything wrong?
It’s our own mistakes that we just can’t experience on our own
If we blunder, their words babble on as a magpie
Gossip swirls round and round like cream swirls in coffee from one side of the cup to another person
Our love life is picked from an apply tree for we can’t marry Caucasian of other ruling races
We are Alaska Natives; we’re not country hillbillies like South USA
Cut us some slack by letting us be to settle
I have my own wonderfully planned life, this isn’t yours to plan
We should respect you not re-live a life as your horror
This is real, this is new, this is my first TRUE love
He made mistakes and so did I
Why is it incomprehensible that with mistakes, we do learn?
The words that you force into our head of others really hurt and burn
Please, please, please, PLEASE back off of our love!
We didn’t make young kids do what they did
You created visuality yourself by allowing them to watch restricted movies
Think of it like this—animals mate, people in movies kiss and mate, and you kissed in public back in the day—guess where I learned to do what I do?
So, lock up you mouth and throw away the key because once you tear up my beautiful life, I’ll run away forever and you’ll never see me!
This is your mistake passed on to me!

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
