    snake pit 1

    woe to him
    that enters this pit
    where slimy creatures hiss
    and cuss. and cuss.
    the venom stealthily
    gets inside you, as you
    struggle to live or die.

    come out alive
    and be a serpent too
    hissing, cussing
    spewing venom like the rest.

    or just die -
    nobly, dignified,
    but dead nevertheless

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
