    Poem Commentary

This poem came to me one morning.  I have an Autistic son, 12yrs old, and he is the source of my inspiration. I often have feelings that I wonder if other parents have, and don't, for whatever reason share them. I don't write from the stand point of a, "mother with an Autistic child" but, just a mother.

    Tev's Staut

This is the story of a young boy,

    Smart, kind and somewhat coy.

Not born of fame, fortune or wealth

But unable to tell you his story himself

I’ll try to take you as far as my “knowing” goes

But the dept of Tevin;s world, only he knows

It happened one morning in 01

When  Tev started to repeat what he had done

You don’t notice at first, you think it’s no matter

Until voices inside, start to chatter

Quite you say, there’s nothing wrong.

He’ll do it for awhile, but it won’t last long

Keep going, don’t look, that’s all I could say

Tomorrow will be different, no repeat of today.

Deep down inside your alarms start to blare

But you continue on like you don’t have a care

Keep going you say as he starts to walk

while holding your breath waiting to see if he can talk

he doesn’t at first and I say that’s ok,

all kids have their own schedule, they start their own way

perhaps he speaks more when you’re not around,

til one day you notice, he hasn’t made a sound

what’s the problem you say, he’s twin’s not like this

so you hold him close and give him a kiss.

I’m looking at him, he’s looking at me,

well, he’s looking in my direction, but I don’t think he sees.

Where are you Tevin, I quietly ask

We connect for a moment but it doesn’t last

I try holding his gaze with all my might,

But I see him slipping, going toward the light

A faint little smile appears on his face

And then I know he’s in his special place

Where does he go, what does he see

Is someone there that loves him more than me,

I wish I could go, if only for awhile

Maybe then I could stop being in denial

Of a world so far, so futuristic

Where the only ticket to there

Is that you must be autistic.

It gives me chills! Nice writings! I've almost read them all.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
