The reflection

I looked down upon a grassy lake. I gazed at the reflection and soon learned it was a fake. Everyone i tried to be, everyone i tried to please, not one person that looked back at me was actually me or the kind of person I wanted to be. I then asked the reflection why do you mock me so? With a gentle reply she said there is some thing you need to know. Not one person alone makes you who you are and because of that you are a better person by far. Place your hand against my heart and I will show you where your roots did start. Instead of seeing all the people i didn't want to be , all my ancestors I began to see the brave , the strong , the great, and the meek, and in all of them I saw just a little of me. My heart and mind finally understood the peace that lies within. Now I'm on my own for a brand new life I must soon begin, remembering everyday everything the reflection had to say.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
