    Poem Commentary

    I wrote this sitting on my lumpy couch, while my grandma and her friends played cards. Their wisdom inspires me. Life hasn't been easy for them, yet they laugh and smile and dance.

    The Ultimate Test

     

     Life eats us up

    Life throws us up

    Life handles us like puppets

    Life is the ultimate enemy

     

    Let us be wiser

    Let us look beyond the surface

    Let us win the battle

    Let us be loved and give love back

    Let us take the good things with open arms

    Let us be strong in the darkness, life puts in our path

    Let us always look at the cup as half full

     

    For life is the ultimate test

    I like that life is the ultimate test because it is what makes us who we are, but who we are is the choice we make.

    MY ULTIMATE TEST -LINE FOR LINE/ devoured in small portions from birth/ regurgitated into being again and again/ we are attached by umbilical cord to a puppet master unseen/ to march out our numbered days/ / A small flotsam in a sea much wiser/ we strain to see above the surface/ waging a titan's war within/ like the mirror to take in the sun, and throw it back/ Into the waves an open arms of the ocean/ to be a resilient strain, that holds the phosphorescence of the day well within the closing night/ standing as a glass half full/ to fill the darkness full of light.

    In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.
