    True Loyalty

    True loyalty

A thick and eerie darkness covered the coast land, momentarily interrupted only by the occasional pink lightening flashes, far off in the distant, darkened clouds. One flash of lightening, two flashes of lightening, three flashes, Habakku set in silence on the hill top, watching, waiting, looking for the horror that would destroy him and his people. Four flashes of lightening, five flashes, six, a distant shape appears, barley visible but it is there regardless, Habakku squints his eyes, out over the ocean to get a better look at his approaching destruction, which was revealed by the last flash of lightening. Seven flashes of lightening, and again its distant shape appears, miles away but getting closer by the second, moving at an untiring steady pace, closing in, moving closer, coming to destroy, like it has done so many times before, a true beast, a monster in every sense of the word. At this distance the horror would arrive in a half a day or more, plenty of time to get some distance between him and his destruction. But Habakku just sits there waiting and watching the beast approach. This is his land , this is the land he was raised in, this land has been with his ancestors for centuries , and even though he knows he is no match for the approaching beast he will fight, he will not give up his land without a fight, no. Habakku’s other half and three offspring are sleeping back at the village in the illusion of peace, unaware of Habakku’s knowledge of the coming beast, or the horror of their near future, his two boys and little girl will not be able to live and grow in this great land of theirs, no, this is their last night of rest, before there whole world and everything they have ever known is taken and destroyed. But there is no changing that now, what must happen will happen, and Habakku can only prepare for it. So on the hill top Habakku sits, and waits, on the horror that’s about to come, on the beast that’s about to take his land, and on his death, which he has already accepted.

The next morning Habakku was killed, and his other half and off spring along with the rest of his village and family were put in chains and loaded like animals on to the bottom of great big ships, to sail to a distant land called America.

In loving memory of all the people that died for my freedom.
