Untitled 1

Why did I have to fall in love with you?
I knew it would never work.
There's no way you could ever love me.
I'm too useless and ugly and imperfect.
But you're so perfect.
Maybe not for everyone...
But you're more perfect for me than you'll ever know.
I wish I could find a way to tell you...
and now it's too late.
Yesterday, your words broke my heart.
But if I said anything, I'd lose you.
I'd lost your friendship...I don't want to lose your friendship.
So I stay content being your friend.
Even if I know it will never go beyond that.
But every time you talk about her...
it hurts.
And my heart breaks a little more each time you talk about her
or any romantic interest you may have.
I need you
But you'll never see past our friendship.
I love you
But we can't be anything together.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
