When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

When I grow up, I'll find a man
who loves me as I am.
He'll put me on a pedestal,
be gentle as a lamb.
Four little kids will call me Mom,
two boys and then two girls.
They'll be so cute, so smart, so good
with blue eyes and blonde curls.
When I grow up, I'll know my heart
I'll know what I'm about.
I'll never question why I'm here,
of that I have no doubt.
It's funny how the years have flown,
life's dealt me a strange lot.
For all that I had hoped to be,
is everything I'm not.

Are yuo sad or grateful? The mood isn't really clear to me, but besides that the verse is good, and your depiction of the American dream is almost nostalgic, even though you were looking into the future...

It is what it is...I guess I'm thankful that even though things don't always turn out happily ever after, everything that does happen ultimately makes you who you are today, which is something to be celebrated. Thanks for your comment, though.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
