    Poem Commentary

a reflection of days gone by, contrasted with the present. I took this reflection from a beloved person who at an advanced age had trouble dealing withthe electronic era. Everything from the way phiones work to changing a channel on tv. her favorite line was "why do they have to go and change things???? This poem is dedicated to her as she looks down from a better place.

Why do they have to change things?

Why do they have to change  things ?

    To complicate our lives

I liked it when the world was simpler

    Before this techno jive

All I ever wanted to do

Was to simply hang up the phone

Don’t tell me “this phone’s in use”

When I know I am here alone

I remember when life was easier

    Changing channels on tv

    Now  there’s  a million choices

And nothing I want to see

Why do they have to change things ?

I just want heat up my tea

    I press a million buttons

And it’s way too hot for me

Why do they have to take  out

    All the things I enjoyed

All in the interest of good health

And the things I should avoid

I have made to this point in life

With barely a bump or bruise

    Maintained my sense of humor

    And the ability to amuse

But sometimes things seem so involved

    Complicated at best

The world is in a hurry

I just need some time to rest

Why did they have to change  things

But I think I have seen it all

I much prefer the simple life

Let things move at a crawl

I think the view was nicer

At a slower and meaningful pace

    Changing things brings much confusion

And life is not a race

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
