    Poem Commentary

Without the influence of good leaders the world is spinning out of control. It is time to reflect on the teachings of the wise.

    A Dreaded Malady

Where are our elders that loved to cook
not with fire and water but words of wisdom
breaking kolanuts offering blessings and freedom
peppered in bitterness lifes rough mantle they took

Where are they who made us fear God in our deeds
who said, if the eagle perches let the kite perch too
who taught do unto others as you wish them do unto you
our dear grey haired elders who meet most of our needs

Where are they who instructed us to wash our hands
who made us seek out in despair their soothing voice
who with gentle but stern prodding moulded our choice
joining in their sacred meal we begin to understand

Forgotten are our good fathers who moved the earth
dreaming, speaking and living the life of goodness
who conquered avarice, lust, envy and greediness
retreating into our foggy twilight they embrace death

Little wonder our days are full of evil and sorrow
lost are our elders with foresight to our tomorrow

This poem is dedicated to my late father Mr Harry Ajagu, to Prof. Chinua Achebe and to Prof. Wole Soyinka.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
