Anticipation

Poem Commentary

During my first year in college, I met a guy through a friend. We got along well and became friends quickly. For months, it was clear to everyone around us that we were falling for each other. Neither of us had the guts to say anything. One night, while studying late, I got the motivation to ask him out. I did and it was the best decision I've ever made.

Anticipation

The idea manifested itself in my mind
Already after midnight
I shouldn't have been awake
It was the best idea I had ever had
Never in my life had I been so bold
Never in my life had I taken chances
Men ask women out, not the other way
These old fashioned values hid a fear
Fear of rejection had held me back
Something was different this time
I had no fear of facing you
Only giddy anticipation
As I walked briskly up to you
I sat down and asked you
The biggest question of my life
I knew you wouldn't reject me
You looked confused at first
You processed my words slowly
And quietly accepted them with a kiss
A long awaited kiss for both of us
One that sealed our fate
I call it my divine intervention
And thank God for it

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
