Clinging furtively he coughs

Yellowed fingers withdrawing

Giving way to convulsing

Death the price well paid

Filthy habit they chastise

Dutifully espoused

Ignorance polished still dull

A dying Buddha sighs

Pointing beyond form

Eyes twinkled with a spark

Soon glazed over

Legacy all but snuffed out

Hundreds sat in circle

Pieces of truth dispensed

No more no less

Much needed medicine

The reaper awaits his due

A nearly empty circle

More than twenty years

Final words offered

The Bodhisattva inhales

Last drag of Camel filter

Calloused fingers snuff out

This round complete

Eve..I appreciate your comments..Writing this touched me deeply...Good thoughts...James

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
