    Favorite Teacher

Thirty-four years ago I was in elementary school
Sitting in a desk in second grade
    Still wistful for summer vacation
Yet excited for the new school year

I was thrilled that I endured the prison that was first grade
With a teacher who was more dictator than facilitator
Treating us like whipping boys and girl
    Enforcing with fear and punishment
I am surprised I learned anything at all

The second grade teacher, oh how I adored her!
She was the opposite of the dictator
So kind, so gentle, accepting us as we were
With a laugh or a grin at our silly tales
And genuine concern for our feelings

    She's long since passed away
But her influence on me will never die
She helped shape who I am today
    Wonderful teacher, Mrs. Gilroy!
