Gasping for Breath

Gasping for Breath

The sunlight fades...
and day turns into night...
yellows and reds giving way to gray shades...
as I lay my head upon feathery pillow tonight...
I close my eyes...
drifting off into slumber...
when again the visions I realize...
are the same, leaving me not to wonder...
demons and devils alike...
dance within my mind...
like a spinning wheel of a bike...
looking for new earth to find...
they laugh and jeer...
their wicked little curse...
all their chatterings like a cheer...
when my life took a turn for the worse...
now I build strength anew...
placing one foot in front of the other...
knowing what I must do...
become a son, a brother, a lover and a father...
yet, still in my dreams they reside...
these dreams of Death...
that wake me with my eyes wide...
leaving me gasping for breath...

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
