I Know I Shouldn't

I Know I Shouldn't

I like this guy
and I know I shouldn't.
From the outside
he's harsh and mean,
and evil is easily seen.
But on the inside
which I alone can see,
he's nice and funny.
The intensity in his eyes
from just one glance
is enough for me to know;
I like this guy
even if I know I shouldn't.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
