Just Listen

The intentions started off good,
but along the way they took a twist,
it's hard trying to reason with walls,
when the future is dim in the mist.

A world full of love would be nice,
harmony and peace in everyone's heart,
but the real world with all of the fear,
seems to kill it before it can start.

So where do I fit 'cause i'm mad,
it seems that no one has time to reflect,
on the ways to make peace real,
all i see is an imminent global shipwreck.

So i try to instill in myself first,
all the things that all men should feel,
the courage to always ask questions,
to determine the myth from the real.

So now if you truly can see,
past all my moaning and pissing,
then maybe you can explain,
why i can't get anybody to just listen.

So, what was it again you had to say? Everyone here is talking at me, and I only have two ears.... Is this where I am supposed to get the joke? Or where I realize there isn't one?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
