    Poem Commentary

This poem I dedicate to Stephany

    ONE CHANCE

Days and nights spent in prayer

    Asking for guidance to speak

    Revealing to her my feelings

That she’s all love to me.

    No questions, no regrets here

I want to hold her close

    That she may find comfort

Each time I love her soul.

Some say that it is not worth it

    That I don’t have a chance

And yet to them I answer:

    ‘She is worth waiting for!’

    Her tears are my tears

    Her joys my joys too

    Her eyes are bright light

Her love: far above all gold.

    Perhaps her heart is taken

And I have not got a chance

But still I owe it to her

Telling her she’s got my heart.

If, by God’s blessing, she accepts

If she gives me some time

Then I will ever bring her joy

Washing her tears, making her smile.

I’m not perfect nor a saint

Neither the riches nor the most wise

Yet I offer to her one thing:

    Together to serve JEHOVAH God.

    Evening will see us together

    Night will comfort us

    Dawn will light with joy

    Each day strengthen our bond.

    Problems will surely come

From the Lion, the ‘Angel’ of Light

But with Jah’s Spirit and Love

    Together we will firmly stand.

The best of me, all of her

    I will be her friend and hand;

The world and all its beauty

I shall see through her eyes.

    Just one chance, one opportunity

That is all I ask of her:

    One moment to last forever

One story that will not end.

    Read this carefully now:

She is all I love and need

    Earning her affections

The truth shall set us free.

No matter what I’ll be there

In hope, in faith, in love

Believing in her, with her, for her

(Jah first) until the end of time.

Together we will take the road

    That leads into the West

And far away will find a land

Where both our hearts may rest.

These are my promises to her

    Whose smile is my treasure

    Whose love is my goal

My pearl, my star and angel.

    You see now, dearest Lady

    What I truly mean

Each time I say or write:

“I love YOU now and always…”

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
