  • Hey guys! I recently published a poetry chapbook in memory of my mammaw. It's available on amazon.com and createspace e store. It's titled If I Settle Down... by Charles Cross.

Pop-tart Education

Memories of enlightenment and education
renewed by satisfaction and Silverstein
flashing again and again
over drama geeks singing to Bowie
around the circle vibrations that seemed to
spike gas station pumps
blasting in the rains past bright highways
past Mom              past Dad
past statues and phony grins
innocence and laughter
above playgrounds and applause
above GPA and SAT and ACT
dropped in American wastage
humble souls humiliated by hope
and a false remedy, prescribed early
prescribed to kill the free will echoes
bouncing and invading heart to heart
wasted by social fears of a "Fuck Off Generation"
dumped at the door of sex factories and junk outlets
separated in the toaster
some put on light; some put on medium
others toast well long and hard...
An agitated fatty, camouflaged and smelly
asks, "Are we not all in the same mess?"
The N.Y.C. professor smiles at the butter-tarts
The forgotten lessons of History
play part in the Symphony of Restoration
luring innocence and power and love
away from pharmaceutical beasts
old protestors and hungry police
to a serenade over thousands
thousands of strong, beaten brothers and sisters
listening to mend and change
dancing in crammed ghettos and trailors
dancing till the toaster stops

Immensely telling write about our world and educational system. It touches on many things that are ugly about our world and what needs awareness. Drives the reader to pursue the solution...

I may have laughed when I saw the title, but I say this piece is a true and wonderous poem.

This is a great alma mata salute to what's right/wrong with education. I am a high school teacher and I get this for sure. I love the metaphors, similes, and your swirling of pop culture ironies. Very clever title. ginga

Nice imagery and cryptic analogies. Each line gets me thinking. Not sure if it's instant and sugary or time consuming and bitter that is the better meal. Nice work. Thanks!

Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.

Plato (BC 427-BC 347) Greek philosopher.
