Russian Roulette

I wanted it to end

I wanted to put the gun to my head and pull the trigger

So I pulled it

But nothing happened

All I heard was a click

And I was still alive

Tears started welling up in my eyes

My heart beating madly like a humming bird in my chest

But I couldn’t feel anything at all

I was numb.

At that moment I realized that I didn’t want it all to be over

I just wanted someone to love me

Someone to care

Someone to talk to

Someone to share my hopes and dreams with.

I wanted to live again

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
