    Poem Commentary

Remembering the wonderful smells of spring in Manhatten
Have not experienced in 40 years yet never forgot

    Spring in the City

    Walking your streets again
to the rapid pace of busy people
The intoxicating aroma of a fresh
    spring rain bouncing off asphalt
A sea of umbrellas washes the sidewalks
    People everywhere not noticing the
    playful droplets surrounding them
Too busy to enjoy the smells and
    sounds engulfing their every breath
Flowers awakening after a long cold
    winter.......this is spring

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
