    The Empty Chair

She sits every day by the window and stares,
Beyond the scenery that you and I see,
She is lost in a memory from long ago,
And for a short time she is free,
She doesn't notice the pain she is in,
For she is living again as a child,
Running and laughing and playing with friends,
Enjoying life again, if only for a little while.

He hold his wife and kisses her cheek,
Though she no longer responds to his touch,
And he wipes the tears that slowly fall
From his eyes that now cry so much,
His heart breaks a little more each day
As he watches her stare from her chair,
Into a time and place only she sees
Where she has no worries or cares.

Her chair now sits alone and empty,
    A painful reminder each day,
How he had to watch the woman he loved
    Slowly wither and fade away,
    She was his whole universe,
Her love so faithful and true,
Now only an empty chair remains,
Leaving him alone and lonely and blue.

No solace awaits those who sit and stare,
For an empty chair holds only grief,
There is no kindness in its design,
Just reflections of the strong becoming weak,
An empty chair is like a cold winter day,
It shows no mercy to those left behind,
Retaining memories too hard to bear,
    That mirror a happier time.

I like how the empty chair connects with the feelings of loss with the people involved with the person who passed. Very good visual.

I really enjoyed reading this poem. It made me think about how everyone responds to death a little differently. Keep on writing and never lose faith in yourself!

This is a superb poem! It poignantly expresses the suppressed grief that all of us experience as we watch a formerly strong & assertive mother or father become gradually erased by a dementing illness. An intensely personal expression of an increasingly universal experience. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment. I wrote this poem about my mother. she had her favorite chair by the window in the living room. It was the first thing my dad got rid of after she died. No one could stand to look at it. Sorry it took so long to reply, but i lost my password for my e mail after our computer broke down and I just found it so I am trying to get caught up.

I am glad you liked my poem. I haven't been on the sight for obviously a long time. I was very sick last year.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
