    The Experiment

    Just take five minutes...
    Step outside, close your eyes...
    Take a few deep breathes...
Tell me, what do you hear?
    Birds chirping, church bells ringing?
    Traffic passing by, sirens blaring?
    Neighbors chatting, children laughing?
What does your world sound like?
Now, open your eyes... slowly.. look around...
    What do you see?
Lush green grass and tall majestic trees?
    Tall buildings, parking lots?
Fluffy white clouds suspended in a blue sky?
    Or a gray, overcast sky?
    Do you see flower gardens?
How do you see your world?
    Take a deep breathe in...
    What do you smell?
BBQs, fresh cut grass, freshly brewed coffee?
Fragrant flowers, the hint of rain, exhaust fumes?
Do you live in quiet, peaceful surburbia?
Or in the heart of the city?
    It matters not...
For there's something to appreciate everywhere...
Look for it... Find it.... Savor it.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
