Watching and Waiting

By: Amanda L. Pittman 1-23-08

Watching and waiting;
Watching and waiting to see if I’m next in line.
Waiting behind the crowd
Wondering when my light too will be extinguished.
For I am a candle that stands freely
And burns bright into the night.
My wax burns quick and collects like pools
Of blood around my wick.
With every drip rings of ripples form
As if making halos for the angels above
And persons who have gone before me.
I wait for the day when I join them.
For when I am vanquished here,
There I know I will never be put out.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
