What can I say about little boys (a reply to "Lil girls")

What can I say about little boys

                Who’ll tug at your heart

    While scattering toys

                From the moment they’re born

They are the pride of their mother

                Who swear that before them

They had loved no other quite so

                Much as this little boy

They grow so quickly and by the time they

Turn two they are driving you crazy

Just seeing what they can do

To push this button or pull

    That string

Trying to get away with most anything

Testing your limits and how far

    They can go

Some of the first lessons they’ll

    Get to know

Many more they will learn as long

    As they live

                They’ll learn to take

                            They’ll learn to give

Mom’s little boy, Dad’s little man

Every day we wonder what God has planned

Soon they start school and you start

                To let go

You know you have to release

    To allow them to grow

School is a challenge for both

    You and him

It’s the building of life and you just get to look in

Oh he’ll holler for help with this

    Work and that

Come throw a ball Dad, teach me to bat

Weekends at the soccer field cheering him on

Savoring every moment knowing soon he’ll be gone

                Grade school sillies, middle school

    Growth pains

High school comes with a brand new game

Tougher homework, more books to carry

Sports more intense, letters in the balance

And then there are phone calls at all hours, day and night

Strange moods, low talk, is he all right

Then you find out that that his heart has been given

To another woman not you he’s been smitten

The love he first learned at his mother’s breast

He finding out now that it’s another test

                He’ll have to pass

He’ll have to have manners, courtesy, style

If he wants to stand tall

    And win all those smiles

That will tear him apart as he learns

What is real and what is just today

Which one is forever which is just play

Did you teach him enough did you show him the way

Does he know that you love him

That its forever not just for today

For this young man will leave his family and cling to his wife

But does he know that he can always come back to the mother that bore

Him and the dad who sacrificed

To give him all they hoped he would need

                To succeed.

The future we give to these that we love

All we can do is pray we did enough

That God will be with him as he walks this

Road and bless him with knowledge

    Enough to endure

The mysteries that the world will

    Lay at his feet

What can I say about little boys

Who tear at your heart and make lots of

                Noise

That they were given to us to show us

The love God had when he gave His for us

What can I say about little boys

    I love mine.
