Friend in need

Friend in need

Never forgetting commitments,
by being further committed,
I had a dream.
That hearts would intertwine,
minds would interlock,
and the twain
would understand the one.
"Friend?" I cried.
"Here I am", she lied.
For my arms were empty
And she said nothing aplenty.

How can you ask for love,
yet don't want to be touched?
Why should I be brought so near?
Yet my presence fear?
I feel no guilt!
For your walls are vainly built.
"Friend?"  I cried.
"Coming", she lied.
Her being covertly searching for liberty;
And I, suffering from her scarcity.

Friendship I did seek.
Needed an external source.
I do cherish my beliefs.
Just need to share a mutual thirst.
She might be physically close;
But she'll never be my own.
"Friend!" I cried.
No response.
"Friend?"
"Friend...............!?"
"FRIEND !?!?1?!"
'She's gone with another',
said her mother.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
