Guardian of the sidewalk

Guardian of the sidewalk

Just above the sidewalk
Curtains open wide
Another day for johnny
Another day to ride

Blazing down the crowed stairs
Leaving all his cares
His bike becomes the stallion
Another day with dares

His hair becomes a banner
As it’s flowing in the wind
How I remember yesterday
And the places I have been

All the busses and the taxis
Could never share the joy
Of what the never ending sidewalk
Offers to a boy

Guardian of the sidewalk
The shop keeps have declared
His mother must be proud of him
There’s no way to compare

Past apartments, and the play grounds
He makes his many rounds
Then he hears his mothers call
In a flash he’s homeward bound

Girls try to stop him
But momma’s made some pie
When you’re the guardian of the sidewalk
Sometimes you have to fly

He’ll face the wind a smiling
He’ll say hello , just watch me go
Painting days with happiness
He’s an artist we should know

Guardian of the sidewalk
The world depends on you
I’ll tell the folks we have met
And what happiness can do
