Poem Commentary

written a few years ago

Insomnia

Lying away staring at the walls,
The minutes go by as if they were hours while
The voices in my head endlessly chatter away.
Will it ever stop? Will I ever be at  peace?
Trapped in solitude, feeling claustrophobic,
I strive to contain my fear…but all at once…
The tears begin to pour and I’ve lost my composure.
Then, in spite of my reluctance, I swallow the pills,
Say my prayers as if I will never awake
(For the gift of rest will be heaven to me)
And I lie back as the room slowly fades to black.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
