Poem Commentary

not one of my favorites, but...

Temptress

In a glistening web of deceit, patiently she’ll wait
By the irresistible device she’s created, it’s beauty now used for her bait.
It wont be very long before her trap has caught her victims eye,
Hypnotized, he’ll blindly walk himself into her cleverly elaborate lie.
She easily seduces him and makes him quite at ease,
Although in reality she’s simply tending only to her needs.
Once he’s served his purpose, then he’ll see he’s been misled,
When she nonchalantly strikes for the kill, gobbling up his head.
Immediately she returns to work, another web to weave,
And another hopeless soul she’ll be ready to deceive.
It’s the never ending  cycle of life, in which she’s able to thrive,
By being the predator rather than prey, the only way to survive.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
