    Poem Commentary

To be sung in a lilting, taunting manner.  The words should dance off your tongue in a very playful, mischievious way.

    Kitty Cat

    Kitty cat, Kitty cat

    Winking in the night time

    Watching at my window

    Waiting for the right time

    Little paws, silver claws

    Reaching for the latch now

    Open up my walls and

    Scratch across my chest now

    Rosy tongue, bloody tongue

    Lapping at my heart and--

    Drinking in my thoughts and--

    This is just the start

    Now

Take me up, lead me out

    Throw me in the moonlight

Strip me of my shadows and

Know me as I am tonight

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
