Life and Death

    Life and Death

I sat back in my Laz-E-Boy
    To watch the evening news
And learned another life was lost
    To this, I was immune

    In this world of dog-eat-dog
My friend, you'd be hard pressed
To make it through a single day
And not be exposed to death

Normally, these thoughts cross your mind
At what seems the speed of light
Like the briefness of a falling star
As it disappears into the night

Then all at once, it happens
You lose someone close to you
Those subconscious thoughts are cut from root
    And all emotions spew

    Priorities suffer drastic change
A rush is put on life
The close friends and the loved ones
    Forced to grow up overnight

    Quietly, we'll think our thoughts
As the eyes around us swell
    Though inside we feel bitterness
On this loss, we musn't dwell

    It's more the harsh reality
Knowing all our times will come
But to worry about the date and time
Would be the end for some

Everyone wants to leave thier mark
Not sure what they can give
But to be preoccupied with death
    How can you really live

Your mark is based on memories
Of all who played a part
Regardless of the length of life
Or how big or small the part

So note the beauty of the rose
    Take the chance and smell
Walk with open eyes and arms
And go on to live life well.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.

    T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
