    Love

I see you peeking out of the window
your excitement carries through the air
    on invisible waves.
I am overcome by its warmth.

    "Are you home?"
    I ask.
    "I am home."
    I say.

    I hear your tail pounding
out the thump of my heartbeat.
    Your whine of impatience
    floats through the door,
    carrying your sweet tune
    of love to my ears.

    "Where are you?"
    I ask.
    "I am here."
    I say.

    Your claws scratching at
    the bottom of the door
    the sound of your sniffing
I can feel the wet mist
    of spit at my toes.

The key turns in the lock
    I grab the doorknob
    You silence completely
    Excitement in the air

    When the door pops open
    you're on me
    paws on my shoulders
    tail shaking the hall tree
    slobber everywhere.

    Unconditional love
    pure and simple.
    No nagging
    no long faces
    just happiness
    and love.

Animals are amazing people I always say and you did such justice in describing the pure love and devotion, the anticipation, the unconditional love that they shower on us in our not so perfect states of human forms, what a great poem, your "pet" would be proud!!

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
