Poem Commentary

When a child is young they sometimes don't understand what you are trying to say to them. To keep your child safe you have to speek in a way that they understand. Don't leave anything out.. Even though they are young they are not stupid, they do and will understand.

Makenzie Mae

She's so small and cute without a worry or a care.  So sweet and innocent with light flowing hair.  She has no worries with people she doesn't know, meeting strangers with a smile she shows.  She doesn't know better for she's not too old.  This is why it's time for her story to be told:

Little Makenzie Mae was planting flowers one spring day.  When the seeds were placed and the ground was wet, Makenzie Mae challenged her mommy to a race, get ready, get set.  GO! NO!  With a quick grab of the arm, she was yanked from the road, tears running down her face, so wet and so cold.  Her mommy scared so she yelled, inbetween her sobs some words she couldn't tell.  ''The road is bad, you could have been hit, now don't you move from the palce where you sit."

Was the road bad altogether or just when your alone?  Could she go in it with someone who was grown?  She can't ask for she's not too old, some of her questions still unable to be told.

A couple of days later while playing in the yard, Makenzie Mae saw that the gate was not barred.  She knew leaving the yard when the gate was barred is bad, but the gate was not so she thought she'd go by the road with that little girl and her dad.

Makenzie Mae did not know the little girl or the man, but she could tell by his anger that her fit wasn't part of his plan.  The little girl was placed in her seat, not too long later Makenzie was at the man's feet.

''What's your name?'' the man did softly say.  ''Would you like to go for a ride with me today?''  Climbing in the car next to the girl to take her seat.  She did not know that she'd not see her parents again until later when they would meet.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
