    Of Collisions and Clarity

Remembered in eyes of light and knowledge
I saw it right before me as it always was
A reflection of time not yet surrendered
and memories bright and starkly aglare

No peace in the brush of soft new lips
Only wounds not quite healed reopened
The battle over, a romantic's bane
Acceptance of refusal burns and soothes

The lines in my face reflect my sins
And my disgrace is defined by my pain
No true warrior I, only her servant
Only dreams unfold the brilliance and truth

I will remain captured, forever imprisoned
Willingly I will slide to the next day
Enraptured of what could have been
And what this chance encounter clarified

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
