    Sepia Tone Technicalities (lyrics)

What's with all the talk of stuff we know nothing about?
What is up with this new found black and white world?
    It's so boring.
    Couldn't we just go back?
    We've gotten just a little bit off-track.

Cause I remember we were swinging and the time flew by,
I remember we were singing songs that weren't so complicated. . .

You were my knight in shining armor and we were fighting the witch of the woods with our fake wooden swords,
And we were running just to run, 'till we couldn't no more-
And we forgot what it was that we were running for.

And did you know that lately my world has been black and white,
What I'd do for your smile- for some technicolor

    I wanna be young forever,
The kind of young when you're free-
You don't care what they think-
You're not sure what you'll be-
That young, when everything was technicolor.

The world around you transforms before your eyes,
    Into a beautiful surprise-
    Into a magical technicolor. . .

So forget their sepia tone technicalities,
We're too young to be over the magic.

We were wishing on the flowers and we were blowing them goodbye,
We were laying on our backs just to get a good view of the sky-
Do you remember when we had time for magic?

And did you know that lately the world has been black and white,
What I'd do for your smile- for some technicolor. . .

Let's forget their sepia tone technicalities,
    And be free.

Close your eyes- they blind you,
Innocent eyes see the world you and I are missing out on.

And I can't train my eyes to look with surprise
On things that I've already seen.

I want to go back to wonderland- Back to where we began,
    When we were free.

Fighting the witch in her castle-
Those wooden swords could fight off anything. . .

Not so in this black and white world,
The magic doesn't apply- no flying.
And there's this new thing called gravity-
But no! Not for you and me!

And did you know that lately I've been black and white,
What I'd do for your smile- for some technicolor. . .

Let's forget their sepia tone technicalities-
We're too young to be over the magic. . .

I bet we could find a way to bypass these sepia tone technicalities. . .
    You and me- free-
From their sepia tone technicalities. . .

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
