Strange that you would smile

Strange that you would smile

So strange that you would smile,

Just looking at you breaks me up inside.

Thinking of you pulls me to pieces.

If I'm careless I'll lose my heart,

You'll leave with a wave goodbye.

You don't know how hopelessly in love we could be.

This is insane, is this really me?

I can't stop thinking of you,

This is my emotional suicide.

So strange that you would smile.

Strange that I would smile, too.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
