Tale of a Maiden

Long ago and far away -
You've heard the tale I’m sure -
Was a princess who preferred to live among the poor.

We all recall her delight
Stirring up the marketplace.
Where she went her words beget a sincerely smiling face.

Though born in wealth and power,
All saw her different mind;
Lively strong and beautiful, but most important kind.

She listened to widows weep.
She praised the work of men.
She played and pranced and pondered with all the town’s children.

Villages about the castle
Were the homes of her heart
So there she loved and there she stayed and to this day the people say

...her warming presence is always felt.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
