The Gift Of Life

Poem Commentary

Having beaten breast cancer but still having to cope with chronic illness I wrote this poem on my birthday last week... Birthday being a poignant time!

The Gift Of Life

The pungent taste of coffee lingers on my tongue,

Inner voice is finding reasons to be strong

The gift of life I should embrace,

As illness stares me in the face.

I have no right to sit and weep,

For those less fortunate went to sleep;

God said to me… You have a chance,

Now go my child and learn to dance…

Upon the meadow freshly mown,

The world is yours; is yours to own.

Take the time to taste fresh air,

Feel the wind blow through your hair.

Cherish all that you hold dear,

I’m by your side… so have no fear.

Release the anguish from within

And free yourself from harmful sin.

Those muted words I recollect,

Until they take profound effect;

Inspiring me to cleanse my head,

For I am blessed… Alive, not dead.

My eyes scan round the coffee shop,

Where busy souls have come to stop;

A brief exchange, or to rest a while…

I hope, they see… My grateful smile!

Beautiful. Congratulations on both beating cancer and rediscovering the joy of life. The aftermath of it cannot be easy in the slightest, as you set out in the opening stanzas, but where you use the following stanzas to write your gratitude that you are still among us is where this poem shines as a reflection of your strength, faith and, when you couple these with your gratitude, it also reflects how much you deserve to have beaten it. Well done.

Congratulations on beating breast cancer, a wonderful time for this to happen. Breast cancer awareness month, your birthday. You have so many things to be grateful for. Excellent write and a 10 from me.

Thank-you... Yes! there are always things to be grateful for. Glad you like the poem.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
