The Rose You Gave To Me

The rose you gave to me, so sweet and fair.
Not even a Holiday you thought of me.
Your face with a gleam of happiness.
    Then I saw love.

The rose you gave to me, oh, how I love them so.
You know just how to get my heart that way.
A sign of love that can't be profound.
    Then I saw love.

The rose you gave to me, so much love you have for me.
When I saw your face, that's love to me.
Caring for me and loving me you did.
    Then I saw Love.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
