    Poem Commentary

Dedicated to anyone who has wrestled with plastic.

    The Shopping Trip

The kitchen table is filled with the bounty of a successful shopping trip:

    a light bulb,

    D cell batteries,

    a box of cereal,

    a pound of baby carrots,

    a package of chicken legs,

    and a toothbrush.

They are all wrapped, sealed, encased, and/or otherwise entombed

    in plastic.

Airtight, watertight, impervious, impermeable and unpenetrable.

    The kitchen light is out,

    my flashlight is dead,

    I’m getting very hungry,

and the taste in my mouth reminds me of sour milk.

I sit there staring at the table

and all I can think of is

am I smarter than a plastic bag?

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
