There you have my key,

    There you have my key,

Closed the door upon my heart and
    Won't let any one in.
Had love & trusted only to be hurt,
    But that...
    Wouldn't happen again.
Locked the door and tossed the key in a pit
    of fire and brim.
Love "I said" will never enter my heart.
So no man can rip it apart.
Then I saw you in to the winter sky.
Praying "God" please don't let him cause me strife.
Determind you were to make me change
    my mind.
Just then I thought that little key would
    be so, hard to find.
You held out your palm and proved me wrong.
There it was that little key you had it
    all along.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
