AT TIMES I WONDER...

Poem Commentary

This poem focuses on the 1991 Kano City war in the Northern part of Nigeria, West Africa.

AT TIMES I WONDER...

At times I wonder

Wondering what it’s all about

When the memories come again

Of the brutal killings

Turning sons to be fatherless

Making daughters motherless

Making landlords squatters

Changing situations in the twinkling

Rich ones becoming poor

And the poor becoming poorer

At times I wonder

Wondering why men are so wicked

Callous, brutal and merciless

Burying seven in well, dead on top

‘Axing’ and ‘swording’ the pregnant at door

Burning family in car

Falling the sojourners as unknown

All in the name of ‘helping God’

To market religion

See how wicked man is!

At times I wonder

Wonder if one is looking

Looking at the brutality of man

Wonder if the situation could be stopped

If the bloods could speak

Wondering if the God of all

Wants the bloods of the innocents

The widows, widowers, orphans

But yet I understand; now I know

He is slow to anger

Nemesis will catch up a day

With the ‘starters’ and ‘fuelers’ of the whole

Yet still I wonder

If one could fight for God

If ever God will need one’s help

The stations seemed empty

Barracks, a battle ground

Streets, roads, everywhere covered with blood

Blood of the innocents and saints

The now crying blood for vengeance

Why wickedness, man, why?!

Now I know

Wondering gone! Reality now known

The heart of man is desperately wicked

Wars and killings everywhere

Named God’s war by the ungodly

In this part of Africa

Conspiracy of silent!

Government folds, priests watch

How long will the wickedness be?

From Eden to eternity?!

Now I understand! Now I know!

It saddens me that some men's hearts are so full of evil that they feel that they must start wars.I pray that all mankind will learn the lesson that wars only cause pain and tragedy and are never the answer to anything.I also pray that people of every nation will learn to be more compassionate, loving and supportive to one another.Thank you for sharing this very powerful and emotional poem.
