    Echoes

    What echoes in my mind?

    Voices soft and sweet,

    Trying to destroy

    All this wretched heat.

    Where is it I belong?

    I know it isn’t here,

But where else can I go

    To conceal all this fear.

    Would you save my heart?

    Keep me from destruction,

    Or just hold my hand

    When everything is done?

    I could make it through,

    With nothing at all,

    I’ve done it before

    And I’ve yet to fall.

But do I have to ask

    For everything I get?

    Couldn’t I just once

    Be somebody’s pet?

    Have somebody hold me,

    Without any pain,

    Or expectation

    Or the need to explain?

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
