Poem Commentary

This poem I dedicate to my loving husband, my friend and partner, who is always patiently standing by my side....

For The Rest Of Our Lives

For The Rest Of Our Lives

A simple guy he was and had a simple dream;
He fell in love at first with a beautiful girl,
He thought that he had found just a perfect angel,
He started to build a future in his dream.

But he had overlooked that she had her own plan,
The future she dreamt of was a different one,
He was not included, he later found in time;
He changed heart just as soon and turned his head around.

Then I happened to be standing by the way,
He saw me and noticed, he thought I had something;
I didn't take at first, for me he was a friend,
My heart had someone else, but fate changed everything.

A year or so moved on, our affair grew deep,
I found him so gentle, he found me passionate;
We had each other's arm, our hearts had same beat,
Some promises excahanged and hoped they were for keeps.

Events came without plan and turned without warning,
A crossroad of some kind appeared out of nowhere;
We were made to decide to be one or part ways,
I had mixed emotions, but he was determined.

Without hesitation, my love proved he's a man,
He approached my father, bravely asked for my hand;
Everything just happened in a blink of an eye,
I was barely eighteen, marriage was in my palm.

I was very upset but couldn't do anything,
I had to let my fate run it's course everyday;
My love was so patient and was very caring,
My pain soon disappeared, I learned to live again.

Although disappointed with  an early marriage,
I had managed to cope and fulfill my  promise;
I worked hard just to prove that I could still reach
the rainbow of my dreams, my ultimate sccess.

With the loving support my man stood by me,
He helped me get my course and hold my earned degree,
We gained respect from friends and lived quite happily,
Our four little darlings were his best gifts to me.

Somewhere along the way some weakneses appeared,
They were the tests of time that we couldn't escape;
We had to go through them with courage and strength,
Each one must bear the cross that the other one gave.

Then many years went by, we proved that we could bear
the hardships and trials that we faced together;
Our love and patience had prevailed without end,
For the rest of our lives we will be together.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
